GST Appellate Tribunal Chennai Bench Begins Operations, Marking Major Push for Faster Resolution of Tax Disputes

The Chennai Bench of the Goods and Services Tax Appellate Tribunal has officially commenced operations with its first hearing, marking a major step toward faster resolution of tax disputes. Senior judicial members and top officials attended the event, which is expected to accelerate pending appeals and strengthen confidence in the Goods and Services Tax framework.

 

New Delhi: In a significant step towards expediting the resolution of Goods and Services Tax disputes, the Chennai Bench of the Goods and Services Tax Appellate Tribunal formally commenced operations with its first hearing, providing taxpayers, businesses and industries with an effective platform for appeals.

The inaugural hearing was launched virtually by Justice Dr. Sanjay Kumar Mishra, President of the Principal Bench of the Goods and Services Tax Appellate Tribunal in New Delhi. Addressing the occasion, he said the tribunal would play a crucial role in ensuring a fair, transparent and speedy justice delivery mechanism for resolving disputes arising under the Goods and Services Tax framework.

Justice Mayank Kumar Jain, Judicial Member of the Principal Bench, New Delhi, also participated in the event. He highlighted the role of the tribunal and the benefits that taxpayers would receive through the appellate mechanism.

Earlier, Praveen Kumar Jain, Vice President of the Goods and Services Tax Appellate Tribunal for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, delivered the welcome address. Girish Kumar Vaish, Judicial Member of the Chennai Bench, and Technical Member Sheikh Khadar Rahman were also present during the proceedings.

The ceremony was attended by S. Nagarajan, Commercial Taxes Commissioner of the Government of Tamil Nadu, S.K. Vimalnathan, Chief Commissioner of Customs, and Pradeep Kumar Singh, Principal Commissioner of Goods and Services Tax and Central Excise, Chennai North Commissionerate, along with other senior officials.

Lawyers, chartered accountants, industry associations, departmental officers and taxpayers also participated in the programme. Officials stated that the commencement of the Chennai Bench would accelerate the disposal of pending appeals and strengthen confidence in the Goods and Services Tax system. The launch of the tribunal's operations is being viewed as an important milestone in reinforcing an efficient and transparent tax dispute resolution framework in the country.
